<p> As the fourth of five children, Joe Ferrara ’19 grew up cooking meals and baking treats for his family. As a teenager, he spent summers slinging pizzas and busing tables, envisioning a day when he would run his own business. “I really loved seeing people smile and providing the best experiences for them,” he says.</p><p> So it was no surprise when Ferrara transferred to the <a href="https://sha.cornell.edu/">School of Hotel Administration</a> as a sophomore in 2016.</p>

Sireemas Maspong Accepts Postdoctoral Fellow Position at the Institute for Phonetics and Speech Processing (IPS), LMU Munich

Sireemas Maspong has accepted a position as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Phonetics and Speech Processing (IPS) at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. She will be working with Prof. James Kirby, Professor of Spoken Language Processing. She will be joining the department in April 2023, after having successfully defended her dissertation in November 2022.

Cornell to host Semantics and Linguistic Theory conference virtually

<p> August 17-20, Cornell will host the <a href="https://events.cornell.edu/event/semantics_and_linguistic_theory_conference_2837">30th meeting of Semantics and Linguistic Theory</a> (SALT), one of the world’s leading conferences on the scientific study of meaning in natural languages. Linguistics grad uses social media in dialect research

<p>When Martha Austen ’13 used to say she was fixin’ to eat supper, she wondered why her Cornell friends would raise their eyebrows a bit in her direction.</p><p>Now, she’s made the study of sociophonetics — the study of sound and how speech varies based on different social factors — her focus as a graduate student at Ohio State University.</p><p>And she’s using Twitter as a way to gain access to a mountain of data on people’s speech and dialects.</p>
