Professor Abby Cohn has received a 2017 Internationalizing the Cornell Curriculum (ICC) grant. ICC grants encourage the creativity and innovation of Cornell faculty in a way that benefits students. This year's grants focused on global-at-home opportunities. Professor Cohn's grant will fund development of a new 1000 level course in Linguistics tentatively entitled “Insights into language & culture: Tools for the global learner” and development of a mini-workshop on “Linguistic tools for study abroad” as a breakout session as part of the Cornell Abroad Pre-departure Orientation. Both of these activities will be developed in collaboration with Cornell Abroad and the Cornell Language Resource Center. Linguistic analysis and the sociolinguistic and cross-cultural perspectives fundamental to the study of linguistics offer a useful toolbox to strengthen language learning and cultural awareness gained through study abroad. The new course and workshop will provide synergistic support for language learning on campus and preparation for study abroad experiences.
