NACLO @ Cornell
We are pleased to host a local site for the 2012 North American Olympiad in Computational Linguistics (NACLO) at Cornell. It consists of two rounds: the Open Round (February 2), open to all interested high school and middle school students, and the Invitational Round (March 13), for students who have advanced from the first round.
What is NACLO?
NACLO is a contest for students in grades 6-12
in which contestants compete by solving interesting and challenging puzzles in
linguistics and computational linguistics. Requiring no previous
knowledge of linguistics or computing, these puzzles can be solved by analytic
reasoning alone and serve to introduce this exciting field. Winners of NACLO are eligible to represent
the US in the International Linguistics Olympiad, one of twelve international
high school science Olympiads.
What are linguistics and computational linguistics?
Linguistics is the scientific study of human
language and Computational Linguistics is an interdisciplinary field that
brings together language, logic, and computer science. Some applications of computational
linguistics include automated language translation as well as many search
algorithms on the internet. For more information: http://lsadc.org/info/ling-index.cfm.
